UAV based image acquisition systems have numerous advantages over traditional methods of image acuisition, but untill recently were not readily
available for civilian use. Historically, civilian use imagery was acquired only from traditional fixed
and rotary winged aircraft or satellite based systems both of which have resolution and economic limitations.
Imagery acquired from satellite based systems can be easily accessed however, the temporal resolution and
atmospheric conditions involved have limited their application in many time sensitive situations. As well,
although traditional aircraft based systems have the ability to provide increased temporal resolution over
satellite based systems, their relatively high deployment costs have made them impractical for small scale
and multiple-season imagery acquisition applications.
